Strategies to Effectively Master the English Language

Monday, August 31, 2015 5

Today, a staggering one billion people in the world speak English or are in the process of learning it. Interestingly, many people erroneously attribute this to US political and economic hegemony. In reality, it is the British who are primarily responsible for the widespread use of English. At its peak in the 19th century, the British controlled land on every continent and brought English to virtually every corner of the globe.

Of course, the reasons to learn English are numerous. There are practical considerations— ease of communication with people all over the world, improved business and career opportunities, and better educational opportunities, just to name a few. But aside from this, learning English can be a lot of fun and it opens up doors to vast number of different cultures from the United States to Australia to Great Britain. Learning English provides you with access to the innumerable works of literature, film, and music produced in the English language.

But once you’ve decided that you want to learn English, how do you go about doing so? If you are wondering how you can master the English language, check out these ten great tips.

1.    Take a course. Studying on your own can only get you so far– if you are serious about learning English, it is definitely a wise idea to take an English course. There is probably an English language center somewhere in your local area and you can also always take classes at your local college or university. Online courses can also be an excellent option. If you are just getting started you might want to consider taking this elementary English course. Or, if you are a more advanced student and already have a basic knowledge check out this intermediate level English course.

2.    Learn English grammar. There is no getting around it—English grammar can be pretty complex, full of irregular verbs, bizarre spellings, and unusual conjugations.  Complicating matters, English isn’t entirely phonetic, so how a word looks is not necessarily how it sounds.

However, the bottom line is that learning grammar is an essential part of learning any language. In spite of the difficulty of the task, thoroughly understanding English grammar is essential to mastering English. Grammar mistakes undoubtedly weaken your verbal and written production of English. The less grammar mistakes you make, the more fluid and natural you will sound.

3.    Learn a new English word every day. The more English words you know, the better you will be able to express yourself. The only way to improve and expand your vocabulary is to learn more words. Aim to learn a new English word everyday. Flashcards can really come in handy here.

4.    Make an English-speaking friend. When it comes to learning practice is crucial. Ideally, you want to be speaking the language on a regular basis to master your pronunciation, oral comprehension, and overall speaking skills. Obviously, it is best to practice with a native speaker. If you don’t know any English speakers, see if there are any language exchange programs in your area. These language exchange programs allow you to learn English from an English speaker in exchange for teaching him or her your native language.

5.    Read a book written in English. From Shakespeare to Whitman to Hemingway, the world of English Literature is vast, varied, and incredibly rich. Reading the classics is also an excellent way to pick up on the more finer, nuanced points of English language expression. If you are a literature aficionado, you might even take a course in English Literature, like this classics of American Literature course on the works of famous poet T.S. Eliot or this great literature course about Shakespeare’s famous Macbeth.

And if you’re just getting started with English and can’t handle a classic just yet, don’t hesitate to pick a children’s book. They can really help you to master the basics of grammar and sentence structure.

6.    Watch an English movie. There are an abundance of English movies out there, from romances to horror films to comedies, so there is something to suit everybody’s interests. To give your English language skills a boost pick one and start watching. If you’re afraid you won’t understand everything, you can always put subtitles on in your native language. Even with subtitles, English movies can help you to boost your vocabulary and oral comprehension.

7.    Purchase a computer program. Though a bit pricey, programs like Rosetta Stone can be a great way to learn English. They can be especially ideal if you are serious about learning English but simply don’t have time to make it to an English course on a regular basis.

8.    Work on perfecting your accent. When it comes to mastering any language, pronunciation is key. Remember, there are many different dialects of English. English in New Zealand is not the same as the English spoken in Scotland and the English spoken in the United States is not the same as the English spoken in Jamaica.  Think about where you will be using your English and what specific dialect you want to learn. For example, if you have always dreamed of studying abroad for a year in Australia, perfect the Australian accent by learning how Australians specifically pronounce things. Conversely, if you are planning on working in the United States, you will probably want to focus on the American English dialect. To master an American accent check out this this sound American course to learn American English for success in business or this great accent reduction course.

RUMAH JAGA SEPARUH DARI HIDUP KAMI

Thursday, August 27, 2015 7

(Sekadar satu renungan)

Saya persembahkan satu pengalaman sedih saya semasa menjadi pegawai pelajaran daerah utk tatapan kerana lebih ramai orang suka membaca pengalaman dari tulisan berbentuk ilmu semata. Ambillah iktibar. Bukakan hatimu.

Malam itu saya bersama pemandu membuat semakan ke sekolah-sekolah untuk menyelia kerja pengawal keselamatan sekolah. Beberapa sekolah disinggahi. Akhirnya saya sampai di satu sekolah kebangsaan yg dipinggir bandar.

Bila kenderaan kami berhenti di pintu pagar sekolah, saya turun. Seorang lelaki tua berunifom jaga yg saya jangka 60 an menegur saya.

Saya tinggal dua beranak. Saya kena kerja untuk belanja kami berdua dan cari duit sekolah anak perempuan bongsu saya tu. Kerja lain dah tak larat, kerja jaga ni bolehlah. Saya bimbang nak tinggalkan dia seorang dirumah. Minta maaf encik, minta maaf."

Air matanya mula tergenang di sinar lampu yg berbalam. Bahunya saya gosok utk menenangkannya.

Jika jd ketua, ambil tahu sedikit kisah hidup orang bawah, jangan tahu mengarah shj.

Pejamkan mata, hayati keperitan hidup pak cik ini dan menangislah kerana banyak menangis akan melembutkan hati..

Melanggan majalah keluaran Karangkraf

Thursday, August 13, 2015 5
Melanggan majalah keluaran Karangkraf

Assalamualaikum.

In Sha Allah.

16 Things Kids Today Will Never Get To Experience

Monday, August 10, 2015 7

Since every generation has their own share of awesomeness, there are certain things that the 90’s generation did and the coming generation will miss. They will never understand the sublime excellence hidden in these gestures. I am sure, they have their own things to do, but for me, my childhood was the best of both worlds. Just the right.

1. Writing letters / Receiving letters

The excitement of receiving hand written letters can never be expressed. You can express yourself in a liberating way, which will entail every single feeling of yours and especially the delight of saving them.

2. Indoor games / Outdoor games

Oh, the exuberance of playing traditional board games and enjoying hopscotch with your friends will beat the glistening beauty of PS2 / PS4 anyday.

3. Talking on a common phone

The coming generation will never understand the horror of always passing that barrier of talking to your friends parents, before you could reach them.

And then banging it when you were angry

. . . and the triumph of banging the phone out loud.

4. Having physical photographs

Ours is probably the last generation to have actual photographs in a photo album, since the digitalization has taken over quite dominantly.

5. Cartoon Network

Needn’t say anything about this. My childhood can be summarized in the afternoons that I spent watching these shows.

6. Going to grandparents house in summer vacation

All my siblings are taking internship in their summer vacations. They hardly want to “waste” any time. If not that, then they are traveling solo; but will they ever understand the love of grandparents like I did? Spending months at my native place, without any burden? I guess no.

7. Walkman/ Waiting for your song to be played on radio

Today I have everything on my fingertip, but how I miss the delight of waiting to hear my favorite song on radio or walking with that big bulky walkman in the entire vicinity.

8. A notification free life

My childhood was free from facebook notification, twitter notification, whatsapp notification and a lot more. The only notification I cared about was the one that my mom gave to me. Be back by 6:30 P.M.

9. Ignoring the easy way

You can’t just ignore someone these days. The world has become really small. But ignoring back then was way simplar. Just stop picking their calls and they’re literally out of your wing.

10. The unbreakable joy of having Nokia

That unbreakable Nokia 1100 was the pride of my house. I succumb to despair, every time I even think of dropping my “expensive as shit” smartphone, but Nokia, never. I once dropped it from my balcony and it was still working.

11. The joy of discovery

Discovering something new when you digged at play, something new in that hidden chest, something new when you climbed the tree behind your house for the first; if only kids today left video games to enjoy all that.

12. The happiness of cutting away yourself from the world

How would you do that now? Deactivate facebook, uninstall whatsapp, switch off your phone, deactivate your twitter handle and uninstall other messaging applications on your cell and those social media accounts. Phew! Back then, it was easy. Way easier than this.

13. Limitless discussions with huge uncertainty

Today, everything is backed with facts and the moment you get into a discussion, everyone picks their phone to check for facts. Earlier, we had meaningful discuss, poorer on facts maybe, but endless debates and mind boggling storytelling.

14. Going to the library

I still go to them, but my younger brother enjoys his kindle more than spending time at the library. They have smartphone applications to read, kindle, tablet and everything else but a library card.

15. Not being too busy

We weren’t that occupied. We went on spontaneous walks, we sat with our grandparents, we helped mom with cooking but today the life is different. School>Tuition>Art Class>Dance Class. Just a rat race.

16. A username of your choice

And last but not the least, having a username of your choice.

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”
– Eleanor Roosevelt.

How to Master the English Language

Thursday, August 06, 2015 8

As an experienced English teacher, I would like to share a few tips that I have been doing since I was a child to improve my English. I have to confess that I’m not even a very proficient English teacher actually; it just happened that I had to apply for a TESL course after SPM since my pure science subjects were not strong enough for me to survive at any matriculation centre. Believe me! And the tips that I’m going to write are actually just the basic ones, but maybe some of you out there had never tried it yet. And if you’re someone like my past, then it is highly recommended to you:

READ: Yeah, I know you guys might already feel bored with this word, but no, I’m serious. Reading does not just limited to books, novels & magazines, but newspapers, blogs and websites as well. I even actually read the English subtitles whenever I watch Malay dramas or movies. Trust me, it is very fun!

IMITATE: When I said imitate, I don’t mean to ask you to imitate your mother when she is nagging for your laziness! Haha. But instead, when you’re watching any English movies or dramas, try to imitate a dialogue or two that they said. This will help your tongue to be familiar with the English pronunciations. But not the cursing part, of course -.-

SING A SONG!: This is another way to make your tongue familiar with the English pronunciations as well as adding your vocab. Of course when you’re singing you’ll find new words that you’ve never heard of before! So you’ll get the same advantage as the first & second tips when singing. 2 in 1!

USE IT! : Whenever you got new vocabulary, don’t forget to write it somewhere (make a note book if possible). This will help you to remember the new words better & try to make a sentence or two using the word. This is a typical tip from my former English teachers actually ;)

As for grammar, all the 4 tips above will indirectly helps us with that. Because I’m actually not even that good when it comes to grammar. I don’t really remember all those grammar rules, but I can detect if there’s something wrong with the sentence structure through my experience in reading lots of things. But to be a good speaker, you don’t have to pay too much attention on grammar, but more to the vocabulary used & the sentence structure (OK, it is still part of grammar actually, but you got what I meant right? =.= )

I think that’s enough from me now. Though I know I have been writing too much and I’m not even sure if there’s anyone going to read what I’m writing up until this point, but if you do, lots of thanks and hopefully my writing will benefit someone out there even if it’s only a little.

Till we meet again, bye! :D
